1. Blokus Classics Game

Blokus remains to this day one of the best games to play with the whole family.  It’s one of those rare games that both adults and children as young as four can play with everyone having an even chance of winning.  It’s won over 20 awards because of its ability to promote healthy brain activity.  It’s a must have for every household.

2. Bananagrams

For ages 7 and up, Bananagrams is a crossword style game where players must make words from their lettered tiles.  It is quite similar to Scrabble except that you don’t have a board, and there is no scoring for certain letters – the winner is simply the first person to use all their tiles.  It’s simple, portable, educational and best of all lots of fun.

3. The Settlers of Catan

Currently recognised as the best selling game of the year in both the US and Germany, Settlers of Catan is a game where players must build cities and roads on a board which has 19 different terrains that each produce a different resource such as wool or grain.  It’s a great strategy game for three or four players which is different every time you play it.

4. Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride is a game for 2-5 people where players must collect cards of various trains as they travel around the board on a cross country adventure.  It won the 2004 Game of the Year in Germany.  It’s very easy to learn how to play and while simple enough for kids, it’s challenging enough to keep things interesting and fun.

5. ThinkFun Rush Hour

Rush Hour by ThinkFun is a great little game whereby you must try and get your car out of the traffic jam and be the first to leave the board.  It’s simple enough, just drive your car in a straight line, but with everyone trying to do this at once, it can lead to traffic mayhem.  There are different levels of challenges to set up from beginner to expert.

6. Qwirkle Board Game

Qwirkle is a domino’s style game for 2-4 people where players must match shapes or colours from their blocks with the object to get rid of all their blocks leaving your opponents unable to make a move.  It has won many awards including Mensa’s best mind game in 2007.  It really challenges you to try and outthink your opponents.  It’s great fun and easy.

7. Dominion

Dominion is a two player game of cards where players must race to build their kingdom by constructing buildings, hiring minions and filling your treasury with gold.  It appears quite simple but can be played differently every time you play it.  Once it gets going it’s easy to get hooked and want to play again and again.

8. No Stress Chess

This is a great game for beginners learning how to play chess because you don’t need to know how the pieces move to start playing.  It teaches you by way of illustrative cards that each show a chess piece and how it moves on the board.  Once you become comfortable with how chess works you can flip it over and play a real game.

9. Balderdash Game

If you are good at deception then you’ll love this classic bluffing game from Mattel.  Balderdash requires players to make up the answers and then players must vote one which answer they think is correct.  Its fun lies in the silly or serious answers that people try and give.  It’s a great party game to play with a group.

10. Telestrations

Telestrations The Telephone Game Sketched Out is based on the schoolyard game of telephone (where one person whispers a sentence to another and it gets repeated around until the last person reveals what was said – which is very often completely different to what it started out as).  This is like that except with drawing.
